The water park is the main attraction. This one is quite a bit larger than the Ohio resort, with a larger wave pool and more slides. It doesn\'t feel quite as cramped. I\'m not a big swimmer and didn\'t even put on swim shorts during the convention. While not my favorite place to shoot in, I did get some nice footage there. The lighting is a mix of natural and daylight LED, but still looks decent on camera. This is definitely where you\'ll find the most people.

Anime Texas: The Birth of an Anime Convention

published 2 years ago

Anime Texas is new, so no one knows if it will be big or small, good or bad, successful or unsuccessful. With Josh at the helm and with what I’ve learned about his experience, I’m betting it will have a good first year. Although Josh has pointed out all of the reasons why a Fandom Event convention has so much going for it, this convention caught my eye largely because of the location. As someone who primarily attends conventions to make cosplay music videos, the location is very important to me. Not only does it look good on camera, it can attract cosplayers who are likewise looking for a good location.

The Ontario Convention Center is clean, bright, and easy to navigate. While not necessarily outdated, it was due for a refresh. There was evidence of remodeling work during the convention, but nothing that really interfered with the event. The building has two floors with easy access by stairs and elevators at both ends. Entry is controlled by security staff and there was a bag check. It was no big deal and the staff seemed to have no problem with cosplay props and bags. I came through with a suitcase full of camera lighting gear with no issues. The bag check and queue area were covered by a large semi-permanent tent. The queue moved reasonably quickly, but did get a little long during the peak times of the day. It made sense to arrive early and try to stay inside unless you absolutely needed to leave. This was made easier by the presence of food trucks.

Anime Expo 2022

published 2 years ago

As a content creator, Anime Expo is a real joy. If you take photos or video you\'ll find no lack of cosplayers at AX. People of all ages, abilities, and skill come out in cosplay and are willing subjects for anyone with a camera. There were so many cosplayers this year that you could shoot all day and not get the same person twice.

The lobby of the vendor hall serves as a grand backdrop for the event. The light blue terrazzo floor and towering atrium are recognizable icons of the venue. The glass and steel structure allows light to flood the floor and it stands out in the skyline of downtown Los Angeles. It may not be the prettiest location, but it\'s certainly not the worst.

Outside there’s a popular photo location called "horseshoes". Named so because of the horseshoe-shaped metal structures, you get a bit more variety compared to inside. A long strip of lush foliage is nestled against the parking garage so you can go from jungle plants to urban industrial in just a few steps. Turn around and you have the sleek and modern style of the Crypto.com arena to shoot against. The area is well-trafficked and cosplayers know to gather here, making it easy to find subjects.

Katsucon 2022

published 2 years ago

I\'ve been working on the web site to make some much needed improvements. I know that some of you have encountered issues trying to subscribe to my mailing list. This is due to a Google recaptcha issue that I have no control over. I\'m moving to the older version 2 of the recaptcha and I think it will fix the problem once and for all.

There are also issues when you try to post a comment or accept an offer like the HDR to SDR conversion LUT. Fixes for those are part of a larger update, mostly behind the scenes. I\'m updating the site with a proper user management area. The current method for authenticating in order to post a comment or accept an offer is a little inconvenient. I hope to make it a smoother experience with a common email and password system.

Thanks for subscribing. Look forward to more content, both cosplay and camera tech. I\'ll be attending Sakura-Con this weekend and NAB Show the week after. I expect to get lots of great footage from both events. Stay tuned!

Outside of the coronavirus, everyone seemed to have a good time. People were polite and friendly. I even did on-camera interviews with a number of people. From this perspective, Otakon was a good convention.

As with most things, it’s the people who make an event fun and memorable. Dressing in cosplay makes the convention experience better for both the cosplayer and the plainclothes attendee and I’m thankful to everyone who let me capture them on camera.

C2E2 - Chicago's Comic Con

published 3 years ago

Convention center staff were plentiful and benignly apathetic, meaning they were just there to do their job without much feeling behind it. I personally didn’t have any problems getting through security, but I was allowed to enter through the VIP/Press security checkpoint. I ran my backpack through the scanner and passed my camera gear around the metal detector. It was quick and easy. Most attendees had to walk a longer path through the otherwise empty north building, through metal detectors, and then back towards the south hall.

While there were queues running out the door for registration, they were relatively normal. Being a four day convention helped spread out the distribution of badges. Security was present at all entrances, checking bags and backpacks. Other than the additional time waiting to get through, I found it to be barely an inconvenience even with a large camera and light stand.

WonderCon 2023

published 1 year ago

Convention center staff were polite and even welcoming. They were stationed at the entry points and simply looked for badges. Security checkpoints were mostly visual checks for anything prohibited. There were no metal detectors and I had no problems walking through with clunky camera gear.

I wish I could report on the variety and quality of the programming, but I didn’t attend any panels or events. My schedule is cosplay, cosplay, and more cosplay, followed by a quick run through the vendor hall. Comic Con International is known for hosting industry panels where actors, producers, writers and other professionals participate. Big name celebrities are less common at WonderCon compared to San Diego Comic Con, but they still make appearances. From my experience at San Diego, I’m certain that the panels at WonderCon offer the same professional presentations. The audio and video systems are fully functional and professionally operated. The stages are skirted and have WonderCon skip and repeat backdrops. The tables have paper tents with the hosts’ names on them. At the larger panels with sign language interpreters, they have their own dedicated audio monitor. It’s a big step up from pretty much every anime convention I’ve attended.

Cosplay is of course a big part of any anime convention. There were so many amazing cosplayers at Anime NYC and I was only able to catch a small number of them. The popular series this year seemed to be Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Seven Deadly Sins, Jujustu Kaisen, and One Piece. Taking photos and video in the convention center is a little challenging because the light streams through the glass atrium. It can be both too bright and too dark at the same time. It can also be a benefit if, like me, you love lens flare. I took advantage of it a number of times by pointing my camera right into the sunlight.

Thanks to everyone I met and shot with. I hope to see you again soon!
