MAGFest is a four day festival of music and gaming held at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. It's a true nerd party with lots of fun things to do and see and hear. Gaming rooms and the vendor hall are open 24 hours and musicians perform all around the resort. The ballroom level is open to photography and the famed gazebo rarely has a queue. If you've only ever attended Katsucon you might be surprised about this. There are indeed other events at the Gaylord National which don't follow the same formula as Katsucon.
MAGFest is a sold out event which doesn't feel overcrowded. Whether this is because they limit registration to a reasonable number of attendees or because the attendees are more evenly distributed throughout the venue is unclear. With the focus of the event being music and gaming, not anime and cosplay, areas that are crowded during Katsucon seem less crowded during MAGFest. As mentioned earlier, the gazebo on the ballroom level, which generally has a queue during Katsucon, is wide open for photos during MAGFest. Likewise, the atrium floor is walkable whereas during Katsucon it is often stop-and-go foot traffic. That's not to say MAGFest doesn't get crowded. It definitely does, but on average it seems less crowded or at least the crowding is less concentrated.
The mood of MAGFest is more chill than Katsucon. People are there to have fun whether that be through gaming, listening to musicians performing, or cosplaying. To be clear, there is a lot of cosplay at MAGFest, but it doesn't feel like a priority activity. There are plenty of people both in and out of cosplay. MAGFest is more like Dragon Con, if you've attended that con. It's nerds being nerds. There's no feeling of it being a prestigious event where the cosplay elite show off their latest builds like at Katsucon. It's more of a hang out with friends vibe. There was a shrine of Danny DeVito or someone on day zero for heaven's sake! I regret not bringing my DTJAAAAM standup. Had I been aware of the vibe of this convention, I would definitely have brought it. I would love to see what blessed additions would have been made to it.
Given that both MAGFest and Katsucon are held at the same venue just one month apart and both have ample numbers of cosplayers, the choice to attend MAGFest over Katsucon might seem obvious as a cosplayer. Indeed, given its popularity and sold out status, it seems as though many cosplayers have caught on and are attending MAGFest in lieu of other events.
While attending MAGFest might be the obvious choice, actually attending it is slightly more complicated. Getting a hotel room at the Gaylord National for a sold out event is a challenge that typically ends up in a mad dash to book through the familiar Passkey portal. However, for the 2026 event MAGFest launched a completely new proprietary hotel booking system. It was a complicated system where you declare your interest in certain hotels, establish groups of people who would be staying with you, and then enter a weighted random lottery. I was skeptical about this system when I read through the details. Surely such a complicated system would have issues. I've seen less complicated systems fail, but it seemed to work as planned. Neither me nor any of my friends were lucky enough to get a room through this system, but we also didn't have to play the typical hunger games method of booking a room like Katsucon still uses. Whether one system is better than the other is up to the individual. MAGFest's booking system is at least less stressful. Ultimately, with an estimated 25,000 attendees vying for 2,000 guest rooms at the Gaylord National, someone is going to be a loser.
The Cosplay
When it comes to cosplay, I find it difficult to say that cosplay at MAGFest is different from cosplay at Katsucon or any other con for that matter. It's not a comic con so there aren't a great deal of comic book characters. It's not an anime convention either so that's not a stand out genre. I would say there are more video game characters which is 100% on-brand. With the relaxed environment you can rest assured that no one will really care which genre your cosplay falls under. Just bring your cosplay and have a good time. You are welcome at MAGFest.
