Colossalcon 2019 - Swimsuit Anime Convention

published 3 years ago

Yep, a convention during a pandemic. Like everything else, conventions were really messed up by 2020. Colossalcon pushed their event to later in September, but it was ultimately cancelled. Room reservations and badges were allowed to rollover to 2021 and here we are. Just like with the ongoing legacy room booking debacle, you can thank (or blame) the Kalahari for this event happening in June of 2021. I doubt it would be if it was solely up to Colossalcon. You can tell from reading the Facebook posts that the Kalahari management are basically forcing the convention to take place. As far as I\'m aware, this is the first convention of its size and notoriety to be happening in the midst on an ongoing pandemic. Granted vaccines will be widespread at the time of the convention, but people are understandably concerned.

There are a number of precautions and changes in place to mitigate the spread of the virus. How they will affect the convention experience and whether they will be effective against spread is anyone\'s guess. I personally am not worried about catching covid. I\'ll be fully vaccinated and will still wear a mask and follow the rules. The tone on the Colossalcon Facebook posts regarding conventions held during a pandemic has shifted compared to last year. In 2020 people were adamant that conventions shouldn\'t happen and were almost cancelling anyone who held or attended one. Now, there are a lot of people excited to be going and telling others to stay at home if they are concerned about covid. I don\'t think this is because people want to be reckless, but rather they want to do something fun and normal. A year of shutdowns and restrictions have taken a heavy toll on the psyche and something like an anime convention seems like a light at the end of the tunnel.

With many states like Florida and Texas having lifted mask mandates, I expect to see other conventions happen this year. Certainly Colossalcon East and Colossalcon Texas, since they are both at Kalahari resorts and Texas has no mask mandate. I wouldn\'t be surprised if Dragon Con happens in some fashion, but I\'m not putting any money on it. Holiday Matsuri is also practically guaranteed to happen since it\'s in Florida in December and staff have been posting photos and talking about room reservations.

Anime Texas is new, so no one knows if it will be big or small, good or bad, successful or unsuccessful. With Josh at the helm and with what I’ve learned about his experience, I’m betting it will have a good first year. Although Josh has pointed out all of the reasons why a Fandom Event convention has so much going for it, this convention caught my eye largely because of the location. As someone who primarily attends conventions to make cosplay music videos, the location is very important to me. Not only does it look good on camera, it can attract cosplayers who are likewise looking for a good location.

The reputation of Fandom Events precedes them and that’s a good indicator of how well their events are run. The low hotel rate is also a very good thing and is among the lowest I’ve seen anywhere. Combined with a nice location, I’d say Anime Texas has great potential.

If you’re looking to attend a new convention that‘s affordable, is operated by experienced staff, and is located at a beautiful location, consider attending Anime Texas. Maybe I’ll see you there.

Fandom Events</legend>
</fieldset>Josh Wilson is the owner of Fandom Events and a veteran of the anime-slash-fan convention scene. He’s the show-runner of no less than nine events, including one called “Anime Texas” in Houston. Even though some of his events are having their first year in 2022, Josh knows a thing or two about conventions.

The Gaylord National is one of a group of Marriott resort destinations bearing the Gaylord name. Other locations include Colorado, Texas, Florida, and Nashville and each of them are themed to their location. The National Harbor resort has a colonial theme which matches the American colonial history of the area. The Colorado resort has a mountain and railroad theme, etc, etc. They are all quite impressive in their size and design.

What sets the Gaylord National apart is its massive atrium. Both the width and height are awe inspiring at around 200 ft tall and completely covered by a glass wall and ceiling. It\'s so large - you can see it from afar. The ballroom level has bright marble floors, large doors with sweeping gold drapes, and of course the famous gazebo where everyone lines up to get their photo taken. I personally have never shot at the gazebo. It\'s an okay-looking location, but I don\'t think it\'s worth waiting in line for except to cross it off of your bucket list.

Kalahari Resorts and Conventions established their first resort in 2000 with the Wisconsin Dells location. All of their resort destinations have an African theme that includes animal statues, authentic African art, and African motifs. Depending on your perspective it can be interesting or cheesy. The inspiration to theme them in this way is uncertain, but they’ve really hit their stride at the Texas resort.

If there’s anything I learned from attending Colossalcon Texas it’s that the amount of fun you can have is not proportional to the size of the convention. For a first year convention, and a relatively small one at that, I had an enormously fun time.

The Kalahari resort in Round Rock, Texas is an impressive facility. It boasts the second largest indoor water park in America, 975 hotel rooms, a large and well-appointed lobby, multiple restaurants, terrazzo floors throughout, and a 200,000 sq ft convention center. By the numbers it’s not actually that different in size or scale than their other resorts, it’s just done better.

It’s not a stretch to say that Colossalcon Texas could possibly become the largest Colossalcon. It’s close to multiple large metropolitan cities. Some people can just drive to it from their home each day, which isn’t something many can say about the Sandusky location. It occurs in the usually slow month of November, so there’s less competition and perhaps it’s easier for people to get time off. It has room to grow. The one thing it doesn’t have is Colossalcon Prime’s June weather. The weather was actually quite good for November. It was floating around 70 on Friday and Saturday and reached a pleasant 75 degrees on Sunday. It dipped in the 50’s at night, but was still bearable with a jacket. It was a little overcast and windy, but it sure beats the snow I had in my hometown.

UPDATE: The convention is now scheduled to take place perpetually in August.

Ohio based ColossalCon is an established organization. They’ve been running events since 2002 and this is now their third distinct convention. They have the original Colossalcon, which is often called “Prime”, at the Kalahari resort in Sandusky, Ohio. There’s Colossalcon East at the Pocono Mountains Pennsylvania Kalahari resort. There’s even a Colossalcon Caribbean cruise 🛳. You could call this Texas convention “South”. This was the first Colossalcon Texas, having been delayed in 2020 due to the pandemic.
