As someone who attends a lot of conventions, I am keenly attentive to conventions cancelling. The concerns around COVID-19 are really starting to affect conventions, including three that I have been planning to attend (Emerald City Comic Con, Sakura-Con, and NAB). I assume that most conventions consider attendee safety their number one concern, even though you probably won\'t see it listed in any of their documentation. It\'s assumed that safety is a number one priority, so what happens when a convention is cancelled to meet that priority?

The Ontario Convention Center is clean, bright, and easy to navigate. While not necessarily outdated, it was due for a refresh. There was evidence of remodeling work during the convention, but nothing that really interfered with the event. The building has two floors with easy access by stairs and elevators at both ends. Entry is controlled by security staff and there was a bag check. It was no big deal and the staff seemed to have no problem with cosplay props and bags. I came through with a suitcase full of camera lighting gear with no issues. The bag check and queue area were covered by a large semi-permanent tent. The queue moved reasonably quickly, but did get a little long during the peak times of the day. It made sense to arrive early and try to stay inside unless you absolutely needed to leave. This was made easier by the presence of food trucks.

I\'m a real sucker for food trucks. This usually means unique food items that are reasonably priced which you can sample throughout the weekend. ALA had at least three food trucks every day and they were very popular. They are parked right next to this great outdoor space with lots of sunlight. It\'s the obvious place for everyone to gather to take photos and video of cosplayers and the typical sunny California weather didn\'t disappoint. It was freezing and snowy back home, but 70s and sunshine down in LA. It sure beats Katsucon in February where it has been known to snow.

The transportation cost includes airline flights and Ubers. The \$428 flight from Spokane, WA to Ronald Reagan airport wasn\'t too bad of a price. I spent over \$100 in Uber rides, but that was mostly because the airline sent my luggage to a different airport (it\'s a long story). If I didn\'t go and pick it up there was no telling when or if the airport would have delivered it to the Gaylord. I was reimbursed for the trouble. There were plenty of Ubers around the Gaylord and at least they were reasonably priced.

I\'ve been working on the web site to make some much needed improvements. I know that some of you have encountered issues trying to subscribe to my mailing list. This is due to a Google recaptcha issue that I have no control over. I\'m moving to the older version 2 of the recaptcha and I think it will fix the problem once and for all.

There are also issues when you try to post a comment or accept an offer like the HDR to SDR conversion LUT. Fixes for those are part of a larger update, mostly behind the scenes. I\'m updating the site with a proper user management area. The current method for authenticating in order to post a comment or accept an offer is a little inconvenient. I hope to make it a smoother experience with a common email and password system.

Thanks for subscribing. Look forward to more content, both cosplay and camera tech. I\'ll be attending Sakura-Con this weekend and NAB Show the week after. I expect to get lots of great footage from both events. Stay tuned!

People often complain about the cost of food at these resorts. While I found the other Kahalari resorts to be reasonable, this one seemed to be more expensive. Bottled water is \$3.50. Restaurant meals start in the teens and quickly go into the 20s and 30s. The luxury steak house Double Cut Grill has prices over \$70! I typically like to visit one of the restaurants once, but instead I shared delivery pizza with my roommates. Fortunately there is a Walmart nearby and the rooms all have mini refrigerators.

The Kalahari hotels are destination resorts situated on large properties. They are generally located in less populated areas with less options for lodging. If you book a room at a nearby hotel or short-term rental property like Airbnb, you\'ll have to figure out a good way of getting to and from the resort. They aren\'t within a reasonable walking distance. Uber and Lyft aren\'t reliable. Sandusky is a small city with a limited number of drivers. When the con gets busy, you\'ll either have to wait a while for a driver or pay more money. These alternative lodgings aren\'t necessarily cheaper either, especially when you factor in water park passes. More on that later.
